Why Gura Gear

Est. 2008

  1. We used X-Pac before anyone else did 2008. The first production camera bag cut from X-Pac® VX-21 — sailcloth woven in the USA by Dimension Polyant, the same laminate ocean-racing yachts are made of. It costs more than what everyone else uses. We have never changed it.
  2. Two years. Eight prototypes. One patent. The butterfly opening did not exist until we built it. Both compartments open flat, in one movement, with nothing laid on the ground. You find the lens without unpacking the bag — which matters when the light is going and you have seconds, not minutes.
  3. Nothing on this bag is accidental The same argument, repeated at a smaller scale. A few you will stop noticing, because they work:
    • #10 YKK Aquaguard® zippers, lockable on the camera compartment. An oversized coil you run one-handed, with a cord pull you find without looking — in gloves, in the dark.
    • A bright blue lining. An open compartment reads as open from across a room. Black on black is how gear ends up on the ground.
    • Grey interior mesh, not black. A dropped card or a lens cap shows up. Against black it disappears, and you find out at the airport.
    • Openings placed where your hand already is. The side door exists so the camera comes out without the bag coming off.
    • Atilon® dividers in motorcycle-helmet-grade closed-cell foam. They do not compress, sag or soak up water, and they hold their shape after thousands of reconfigurations.
  4. Drawn to make the overhead bin It started with two photographers and one overweight carry-on. Every bag since has obeyed that constraint: the largest carries two bodies and an 800mm lens and still weighs 4.05 lb empty.
  5. Why it costs what it costs We name every supplier, because the answer is the product. X-Pac® from Dimension Polyant. Atilon® foam from Kaneka. #10 Aquaguard® zippers from YKK in Japan. Most bags will not tell you who made their materials. Weight-to-strength that rivals carbon fibre is bought, not designed in — and it is most of the price.
  6. Light is the expensive part A 30L+ that swallows an 800mm weighs 4.05 lb empty. The sling weighs 1.6 lb. And the shell retains zero weight when wet — the bag you lift at the end of a wet day weighs what it did at the start.
  7. Five years, repaired or replaced Defects in material or workmanship, five years, from the day you bought it. That is not a promise about the bag. It is a bet on it.
