We've made our bag from sails. Sail cloth that is, using the 100% climate neutral VX-21 X-Pac materials. Providing maximum protection while maintaining its ultra lightweight portability.

With our High Visibility Blue Lining never forget to zip up again! The Kiboko Backpack line adds an extra layer of protection with this visual cue.

Our bags are infinitely configurable and come with plenty of extra divider types to accomodate any setup imaginable. Our dividers are also made out of Artillion Foam which is the same stuff used in motorcycle helmets. High impact protection, low weight and profile.

The Kiboko 30L is designed to carry the maximum gear while staying within international flight carry-on size regulations. The bag comes in at 3.9lbs freeing up weight to bring extra gear instead of extra bag on your next trip.

Stowable shoulder straps give the bag a less technical look when storing.

excellent bag for international travel

I bought this bag to pack my sony 600mm f4 and other gears for an international trip. LOVE it. Very good design for organizing gears. The bag has a minor defect on the zipper, and the company promptly sent a replacement and paid for the return shipping. The company really stands behind the brand.

Great bag 30L

I'm able to get my Nikon 600mm TC in one compartment. In the other a 100-400, two Z9 bodies, and one additional lens 24-120 for example. I love the butterfly design, and the bag is more comfortable to wear than my Think Tank Airport Accelerator. The only thing I wish were different is that the Velcro mounting material for the dividers covered the whole bottom of the compartments. As it is now it only covers about a third of it.

Great Bag

Very happy with this purchase. First trip was to Panama to photograph tropical birds. Easily fit my Z9 and 400 mm TC 2.8 plus backup camera body and other lenses. My only wish is for just a little more depth to handle a long lens hood. Overall, great.

This is my second Kiboko!

I bought V1 of this back in 2011. 5 trips to Africa and countless local adventures later and I have finally worn it out. And when I say I wore it out I don't mean it was a wreck it is still a perfectly use-able bag and nothing was torn or whatever but the zips were starting to show signs of overuse and one of the corner areas of one of the main zips was getting a little stuck sometimes. I consider this just wear and tear for how much I used it but didn't want to risk a zip failing in the field. I searched around for other backpack options (since I live in Australia and I still can't buy Gura Gear locally) and even tried a Mindshift backlight but nothing worked for me or compared to the features of the Kiboko 30L. So I ordered the v2 bag and I am so glad I did. It is a nice upgrade from V1 with some nice little touches and really nice smooth zips. I love the opening style still and being able to remove the waist band is a huge benefit as I hate the way these get in the way and flop around everywhere on other packs. It's only downside is not having a laptop sleeve but it is just not feasible in this design and I don't need this feature often anyway. I can house both my Pentax medium format system and a full frame body and lenses as needed.

As someone who has now owned 2 of these bags (and tried several other brands) I can say this is the best backpack on the market for anyone with a large amount of full frame DSLR or medium format gear to cart around.

A Step Down from the Original Gura Gear Bataflae 32L Backpack

I have owned an original Gura Gear Bataflae 32L Backpack for a decade and still use it to this day. The new version appears a bit lighter, does not have waterproof zippers, and does not fully open like the original. Both have butterfly opening but the original also allowed the entire cover to be opened by employing a velcro center channel. The new version does not allow for fully opening making packing and review more difficult. My original is dedicated to a 35mm camera and kit. This new version was purchased to accommodate my medium format (PhaseOne XF) camera and three lenses plus accessories. The non-waterproof zippers are easier to pull but the old waterproof version just required a bit of WD40 applied via Qtip to remain easy to pull. The older version's zippers closed closely and could be locked with a small padlock. The new version does not allow for this convenience. And, while locks only keep the honest people out, often times a small deterrent sends a thief to easier pickings. The overall construction appears a bit lighter but is well made. There are more than enough velcro type dividers supplied to make many more compartments than one is likely to ever need. Overall it is a decent backpack but I would prefer they had maintained the original design and construction.

X-Pac VX-21

In all of our gear we use X-Pac VX-21, a sailcloth-inspired laminated rip-stop nylon. This is the gold standard in materials for bags. Even after years of abuse it holds up as a durable, water resistant, and utlra lightweight material. Some of our legacy users are still using their original Kibokos from 10 years ago.

Main Compartments

Our signature Butterfly style duel front access allows you to access the contents of your bag quickly and without exposing everything to the elements. Pack different variations in each side for maximum organization. Pro body DSLR and lens combos fit well inside the 30L Kiboko. There are also webbed zipper pockets on the outside panel of the main compartment for small misc items. The webbed design allows you to see the contents.

Front Accessories Pockets

At the exterior of the two front panels are the bags accessory pockets. Loaded with zipper pockets, a key ring, places for pens, and enough space collectively to put a wind breaker jacket inside. The zipper pockets inside feature a webbed style so you can see the contents of the pockets.

Our History

Solving for a critical need: Weight

Co-founders Trevor Peterson and renowned wildlife photographer Andy Biggs created Gura Gear to answer a problem critical to traveling to extreme locations: weight limits on photo gear.

En-route independently to East Africa, both Andy and Trevor got into some trouble with the carryon restrictions at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam. “I had packed two Nikon Pro DSLR bodies and 200-400mm f/4, 70-200mm f/2.8, & 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses, putting me past the weight limits. It took some convincing to get in the air, "-Trevor.

Talking over the campfire after a long day of photographing wildlife, Andy and Trevor discussed what the perfect camera bag would be. Literally on the back of napkin, the Kiboko backpack was sketched out.

Over two years of development, eight rounds of prototypes, and one patent application later (and one very frustrated factory manager), the Kiboko camera backpack was launched.

Great add-ons for the Kiboko Bags
